Mom, youâre in
my thoughts...
today and
always.
Itâs a Date!
âShould I meet him there Saturday night?â she asked.
âOf course not. You know the family rule,â I said. The cold pork chops hissed against the sizzling skillet. âYour date must always . . .â âItâs not a date,â she interrupted. â. . . come right to the door,â I chanted without missing a beat. We had rehearsed this very conversation before. A slight pause followed. âWhere is he taking you?â
âOut for supper and maybe somewhere afterward.â Panic peppered her voice. âA whole evening togetherâ alone. What will we talk about?â
âKnowing you, youâll talk about anything and everything. Since when have you been at a loss for words, anyway?â I joked, handing her a short stack of stoneware salad plates.
âBut this is different. I hardly know Tom.â
Brushing aside crisp kitchen curtains, I peered into the deepening dusk. A gentle rain blurred the boundaries, skewing the scene like a photograph out of focus. âWell, thereâs always the weather. Better yet, get him to talk about himself. Ask your boyfriend . . .â
âHeâs not my boyfriend.â
â. . . about his interests. And, by the end of the date . . .â
âItâs not a date!â
â . . . youâll know each other better and probably have lots to say,â I encouraged. After all, I was experienced with this mother-daughter thing. I had raised four teenagersâall at one timeâin the not-so-distant past. Could this be much different?
âWellâif youâre sure.â She paused. âItâs just that . . .â
âYes?â I coaxed, a little impatient with her hesitancy, my mind racing ahead to the details of dinner.
But the voice that answered had slowed, softened and deepened.
âDo you realize how long itâs been? âHer words hung there, suspended, unsupported in the sudden silence. Reaching across me to the stove, she flipped the pork chops and turned down the heat.
â. . . how long itâs been,â she cleared her throat, âsince Iâve dated, I mean? Fifty-five years! With your dad gone so long now, I think . . . maybe . . . well . . . maybe itâs time. Why, Carol, I was seventeen the last time I went on a date.â
I turnedâonce again a daughterâand winked. âOh, but Mom . . . itâs not a date!â
